Stephanie made one of those choices that probably felt reasonable for about seven seconds. Alex left his phone at home, Joy kept sending messages, and Stephanie decided she had seen enough of Joy’s needy routine. The problem is that Stephanie did not just ignore the messages. She deleted them, and anyone who remembered what Alex had once done to her phone could feel the trapdoor opening. Stephanie deleted Joy’s messages from Alex’s phone. Joy’s first two emergencies with Alex turned out to be less serious than advertised. Joy’s third call involved a real accident with baby Kelsey in the car.
