Recast Coups: 5 Times Days of our Lives Scored Big

With rumors swirling that a new EJ is soon to debut on Days of our Lives – and Dan Feuerriegel stepping in as the dashing and sometimes dastardly DiMera created by James Scott — let’s take a look back at some other major characters the soap opted to recast over the years. And did so with enormous success.

Bold Casting Moves by Days of our Lives

Check out five other times Days of our Lives scored big with bold casting moves and pulled off successful actor switcheroos.

1. Mary Beth Evans as Kayla Brady

It’s hard to imagine anyone but Mary Beth Evans as Kayla Brady, considering she’s played the part on and off since 1986. However, it was Catherine Mary Stewart who originated the role in 1982. When Stewart opted to leave the soap after two years, the writers sent Kayla out of town. Upon bringing her back, Evans stepped in as the heroic nurse. She’s since become synonymous with “Sweetness” and created a supercouple with Stephen Nichols’ Steve.

2. Julie Pinson as Billie Reed

Although Lisa Rinna created the role of Billie Reed, the character was later played by Krista Allen and Julie Pinson. It was Pinson’s hiring that resonated with viewers. Not only did she bear a striking resemblance to Rinna, but she quickly won over viewers with her fiery and spirited interpretation of Billie.

3. Robert Kelker-Kelly as Bo Brady

While longtime Peter Reckell fans had issues with the show’s decision to bring in Robert Kelker-Kelly as Bo Brady in 1992, he had a successful three-year run as the character. His Bo was more brooding than Reckell’s, yet he pulled his weight as a leading man and created a perfect pairing with Rinna’s Billie.

4. Lauren Koslow as Kate Roberts

Deborah Adair’s decision to retire from the business in 1995 could have meant the end of the road for Kate Roberts. But the character was reintroduced by head writer James E. Reilly in 1996, and Lauren Koslow (ex-Margo, The Bold and the Beautiful) was tapped for the job. Reilly’s spin on the character paired perfectly with Koslow’s take on it. Now, 25 years later, she’s still stirring things up in town.

5. Stacy Haiduk as Kristen DiMera and Susan Banks

Filling Eileen Davidson’s shoes as the diabolical Kristen DiMera and her wacky, sort of lookalike, Susan Banks, was a huge assignment. Hence, a pro was needed for the job. Enter Stacy Haiduk (ex-Patty and Emily, The Young and the Restless). An acting powerhouse she’s delivered on every level from heavy drama to crazy comedy and everything in between.

Soap Hub Performer of the Week for Days of our Lives: Victoria Konefal

Trouble plagued heroines are a dime a dozen across the daytime landscape, but there’s just something so evocative about Days of our Lives’ Ciara Brady – played by Victoria Konefal.

Victoria Konefal — Performer of the Week

And it is for her masterful handling of a trio of episodes that saw Ciara run an emotional gamut that Konefal receives Soap Hub’s Performer of the Week Award.

Performer of the Week: Victoria Konefal

We’re used to seeing a Ciara who’s in charge of her emotions; a Ciara who’s cool, calm, and collected – even when she’s face to face with a psychopath baying for her blood,  Ciara’s got a streak of assured control that any service person would envy.

But the Ciara that agreed to undergo hypnosis to recover blocked memories seems an entirely different character. She’s unsure, she’s frightened, she’s purposeless. In short, she’s a total mess – and Konefal wisely leans into that new characterization.

The procedure that was supposed to give her answers, left Ciara even more confused than ever. She could remember red hot flames, but nothing more. And then in her heightened nearly frenzied state, she extracted a devastating truth from Marlena (Deidre Hall) – it had been Claire (Isabel Durant) who set the fire that nearly killed her!

Ciara fled her hospital room, desperately searching for a sanctuary that just didn’t exist. In its place, she found Claire accepting a hug from Ben. “Well isn’t that perfect,” she blithely snapped, “the two psycho killers in each other’s arms.”

During the confrontation that ensued, Ciara learned yet another inconvenient truth. Claire had tried to set her on fire more than once. Indignation, righteous anger, fear for her personal safety – in quick succession, Ciara experienced it all, and then she vacillated between the emotions at an alarming pace.

She wanted to decry Claire and her actions, she wanted justice for the crimes perpetrated against her, and she didn’t want to be touched by crazy Ben. “I don’t love you! There’s not a chance in hell that I could love a serial killer!”

Ciara returned to her room and sought refuge in Theo’s (Cameron Johnson) comforting arms. “I don’t want to remember anything, about Claire or Ben Weston ever again in my life,” she declared.

And just as Ciara broke an eavesdropping Ben’s heart, Konefal broke ours. Kudos on the achievement

Amelia Heinle as Victoria Heinle

The Young and the Restless

The drama continues to heat up in Genoa City as Amanda connects the dots, the battle for Cyaxares enters round two, and Chelsea faces more than one interrogation. And be sure to have your tissues on hand for an episode in which Neil is remembered by his two sons…

Young & Restless spoilers for Friday, April 9:

Sally’s stunned by Jack’s reaction to her confession, Sharon defends Adam, Chelsea shocks Nick, and Lauren lectures Sally and Summer.

When Nick’s visit to Chelsea takes a shocking turn, will he inadvertently discover that her recovery has taken a miraculous new direction?!? And if so, will he remain mum in hopes that she can do what no one else has and get Adam out of their lives for good?

After years of fighting for and over John’s legacy, will the Abbotts be altogether removed from the equation when Lauren takes control? And will the move prove to be Jabot’s saving grace?

Young & Restless spoilers week of April 12:

Y&R Restless Rant: Fans decry Mariah’s pregnancy, Chelsea’s plot is unraveling, a lack of consequences for Summer and Sally was disappointing, and more dumb plot points. Did ya’ catch ’em?

Next Week on Young & Restless, Ashland toys with Victoria and Billy, and Amanda takes on Victor!

Young & Restless spoilers for Monday, April 12:

When Amanda connects the dots about her family’s past, will she still want to defend her grandfather, Sutton, in court? Or will she decide to cut ties with the Ames clan for good?

Given Rey’s tunnel vision when it comes to investigating his poisoning, it’s no surprise that Sharon must take steps to warn him about Chelsea. Will he heed her words, or will their talk devolve into another argument about her trying to help Adam?

Despite his decision to keep Elena at arm’s length after she broke his trust, Nate may find himself unable to resist his attraction to his former flame when he lets down his guard.

Young & Restless spoilers for Tuesday, April 13:

When Victor receives a surprise visitor, will it be Sharon coming to bring him in on the plot to expose Chelsea for framing his son? Or might it be Adam himself on his pop’s doorstep?

Will Rey make inroads when he interrogates Chelsea, or will she manage to outwit him, using his natural suspicion of Adam to keep the focus of his investigation on his rival?

When Victoria and Billy compete for a second chance, we can only assume that they’re once again vying for Cyaxares — and that Victor must be very unhappy about the turn of events!

Young & Restless preview: The battle that could tear the Newman family apart. Has Victoria taken on a fight she cannot win… over a man she should not want?

Young & Restless spoilers for Wednesday, April 14:

Break out the tissues! Things are bound to get emotional when Devon and Moses bond over memories of their late father, Neil.

Phyllis bungled her scheme to run Sally out of town, but it’s never wise to count out the redheaded vixen, who will once again manage to get the upper hand.

It seems there is trouble in paradise when the need arises for Jack to set the record straight with Sally. Could this have something to do with Lauren’s move to take control?

Young & Restless spoilers for Thursday, April 15:

It will be a battle of wits between mogul and con when Victor makes an appearance at the penthouse intent on testing Chelsea. Who will get the better of whom? Or might they realize that aha, they’ve actually met their match?

When Rey gives Sharon yet another ultimatum, we have to wonder if she will finally have had enough and throw in the towel on her marriage.

Summer’s done a terrific job of standing by her man as Kyle’s dealt with the fallout from his affair with Ashland Locke’s wife. But there’s trouble ahead when their relationship finally hits a road block. We have to wonder if the bump that stumps them might take the form of Tara Locke and her son, Harrison.

Young & Restless spoilers for Friday, April 16:

Nick exhibits untold bravery when he makes a confession to his lady love. Though she’s been on her best behavior with her significant other lately, one never knows what kind of reaction to expect from the fiery Phyllis.

When Nikki is once again cast in the role of family peacekeeper, will we learn that Victoria has managed to wrest control of Cyaxares from Victor and Adam? Or that Victor is planning to oust his daughter from her CEO seat at Newman Enterprises on the heels of his previous veiled warning?

It’s always a good time when Victor’s most ruthless offspring go head to head. We expect it will be no exception when Victoria turns the tables on Adam. The question is, which of them will come out on top in their latest dustup?

Dan Martin as Lt. Bradley Baker

Bold & Beautiful spoilers for Friday, April 9:

Finn needs an official ID on Vinny and calls someone to do it — but he wasn’t expecting two people to arrive at the hospital morgue!

Bill realizes that he must do whatever it takes to protect the innocent. And heaven knows, where he’s concerned, “whatever it takes” could be anything!

When Hope is urged to rush to the hospital to help make a victim identification, how will she react when she discovers exactly who has met their tragic end?!? Will this be the moment that the story goes from an accident to a full-blown murder mystery?

Bold & Beautiful spoilers for week of April 12:

Bold & Beautiful spoilers for Monday, April 12:

It’s an emotional moment when a positive identification is made on the recently deceased. We can only imagine what will be going through Hope’s mind as she realizes that Vinny met his end partly as a result of trying to bring her and Thomas together.

Given his hasty decision to hide the truth about Vinny’s demise, it’s not surprising that Bill is forced to get himself in even deeper. Watch for him to complicate his cover-up by telling additional lies to those he loves.

Just because Vinny has gone on to that big lab in the sky doesn’t mean that Joe LoCicero is necessarily done at Bold & Beautiful.

Bold & Beautiful spoilers for Tuesday, April 13:

Feeling guilty about his past flirtation with Zoe, Zende attempts to right the wrong that he made with Carter. Will the Forrester colleagues manage to put that complicated chapter of their history behind them?

Given that her last “great idea” involved spiking her sister’s smoothie to induce indigestion, we can hardly wait to see what will come of Zoe’s big revelation about how to regain her happiness.

Bold & Beautiful spoilers for Wednesday, April 14:

When Lt. Baker makes a surprise appearance at Forrester Creations, we can only assume he’ll be there on official police business, given Vinny’s recent death. What suspicions of wrongdoing will he have on his mind… and more importantly, will he have his signature hot dog in hand?

Bold & Beautiful spoilers for Thursday, April 15:

Everyone at Forrester Creations is stunned to learn the identity of Baker’s prime suspect. Will Thomas be accused of offing his former best friend, or will it turn out to be someone else who visited the cabin that fateful night?

When Bill’s frustration reaches a boiling point, it can only mean that Liam’s guilt over running down Vinny is reaching an annoying all-time high now that someone else has been wrongly accused. Will Liam come clean, thus adding to his long list of boneheaded decisions?

There’s only one character we can think of who could possibly stop Steffy from rushing into marriage with Finn — and it isn’t Liam. Read all about the person who could slow down that bridal march — and still leave you loving her afterwards!

Bold & Beautiful spoilers for Friday, April 16:

When Eric opens up to Ridge about his relationship with Quinn, will it to be express how happy he remains with his wife… or to share his reservations about remaining hitched to a natural born conniver?

A person keeping a deadly secret fears they’ve been busted. Is it a case of Liam’s guilt eating him alive and playing tricks on his mind, or will there actually be a break in The Case of the Ill-Fated Lab Tech?

Josh Swickard as Harrison "Chase" Chase; Kate MacMullen as Willow Tate

Nikolas becomes the latest person to clash with Cyrus. (Now what we really need is someone to not only clash with the baddie but figure out how to deal with him once and for all!) Meanwhile, Ava is about to get an ominous package. Could it possibly be creepier than the cockroach she received a few weeks ago?

When Alexis needs help getting her personal affairs in order, Sam steps up. Because while they have had issues, they’re still Davis women, right?

General Hospital casts All My Children vet Cameron Mathison in new, mystery role!

General Hospital spoilers for Wednesday, April 7:

What’s got Valentin on edge? We’re not quite sure, but Anna will be there to help calm him down. (Anybody else really loving the vibe between these two lately?) Meanwhile, Brook Lynn will have to think fast as a situation calls for her to get creative. Wonder how her improvisational skills are?

Alexis finds herself asking some of the very big, very difficult-to-answer questions as she attempts to figure out how, exactly, her life wound up where it did. As Alexis is getting exactly the kind of help she needs (finally), nephew Nikolas is laying all his cards on the table with Cyrus.

You never know who you’ll run into when you swing by General Hospital. But Finn and Chase can’t help wondering what brought Gregory to the institution.

Look for those around her to do everything they can — whether it’s offering support, showing Alexis a new way to think of things, speaking their truth or even trying to show that there’s always a silver lining.

If you’ve been following the saga, the time has come… Maurice Benard gave his beautiful girl a name — and she approves!

General Hospital spoilers for Friday, April 9:

Peter tries to poison Finn, Ava turns to Laura for help with Nikolas, and Scott makes good on a promise to Franco.

Ava hopes that she can find a way to change her husband’s mind. (Oh, this should be fun, especially given how stubborn the two of them are!)

Jax is there when his daughter needs someone to confide in.

It seems like old times whenever Laura and ex-hubby Scott cross paths, as they do today when she’s on the receiving end of an unexpected visit from her former spouse. Speaking of visits, Carly swings by to see Jason.

Anna and Valentin have struggled mightily with how their past decisions led to the current quagmire involving Peter. When Peter makes them an offer, will guilt drive them to accept?

As Portia finds herself face to face with Taggert, Curtis and Jordan finally take the time to figure out where they stand and what they want moving forward in their relationship.

General Hospital spoilers for Tuesday, April 13:

Despite everything going on around him, Michael finds himself counting his blessings and feeling fortunate. Brook Lynn, on the other hand, finds herself struggling to deal with an overbearing Olivia.

Peter proves that he knows exactly how to push Anna’s buttons.

As Curtis is taking Finn into his confidence, Jordan crosses paths with Portia. Something tells us Taggert will be a definitely conversational topic!

General Hospital spoilers for Wednesday, April 14:

When Jax calls Nina, will she reveal to him where she is… and who she found there? Meanwhile, when Sonny goes fishing for details, might he wind up coming closer to remembering who he truly is… and what he left behind? (Although if it was up to us, he’d never regain his memory.)

Things could get interesting when Brook Lynn and Dante reconnect. (In case you’ve forgotten, Carly once hired Ned’s daughter to seduce Dante away from Lulu. While Brook Lynn did manage to land the hunk in her bed, nothing actually happened between them, as she’d drugged him!)

It takes a lot to shake a woman like Anna, so what happens today that leaves her horrified?

General Hospital spoilers for Thursday, April 15:

As Nina is getting a personal tour of Nixon Falls from Elijah, Carly is back in Port Charles feeling pretty overwhelmed.

Sasha and Brando continue to get closer. Does this mean that Michael’s out of the running where the beauty’s heart is concerned? (Perhaps we’ll get more insight into this when he and Dante carve out time to catch up.) Meanwhile, what should we make of the fact that Willow finds herself feeling helpless?

General Hospital spoilers for Friday, April 16:

Anna and Valentin take a moment to regroup.

Something tells us when Laura visits Carly it won’t simply be to chat about the weather.

Alexis has someone new to confide in when Sydney Walsh joins General Hospital.

Perhaps some of Sonny’s old instincts are kicking back in, because he can’t help but be suspicious today!

Nikolas takes action… but will it make things better or worse? Meanwhile, as we count down to the arrival of Cameron Mathison’s mystery man, we can’t help wondering if perhaps the show is setting up a mini All My Children reunion by bringing back another person from the past… one whom Nikolas probably won’t be thrilled to see!

Paul Telfer as Xander Kiriakis

Whether it’s professional or personal, the moment of truth arrives when Elena is forced to make a tough decision. The question is, will she make the right one?

Young & Restless spoilers week of March 29:

This week’s Y&R Restless Rant dishes Sharon *choosing* Adam, Nick being left gobsmacked, and Kyle being on the hot seat next week. Plus! Those fabulous redheads (and Summer) and more dumb plot points.

Young & Restless spoilers for Monday, April 5:

When Sharon and Adam have a secret rendezvous, will she agree to help him clear his name in light of his heroics? We think she just might. Plus, find out why we predicted Adam would save Faith’s life back in February.

Listen as Sharon Case (Sharon) opens up about her real-life relationship with co-star Mark Grossman (Adam), how it blended into her ‘reel-life’ and why she disclosed it to her bosses at CBS.

The notorious Locke Ness Monster toys with his prey when Ashland backs Kyle into a corner. Given how strenuously Jack warned his son to stay away from the mogul, how will the younger man respond?

We have a feeling Naya and her family are about to get an earful when Amanda speaks her truth! Will they still want her to represent Sutton after they hear what she has to say?

What will the latest developments in the feud bring when Lily gives Victoria a reality check? And does anyone not wish that instead of revisit “Villy,” the show would write Victoria the love story we’ve conjured up.

Her ex-husband Adam is wanted for poisoning her current husband, and Sharon’s met with him under the radar. Therefore, it’s hardly surprising when she has to come up with yet another cover story to tell Rey. Perhaps it’s also not surprising that in real life, a battle is brewing over what seems like the inevitable “Shadam” reunion. Read what both sides have to say, then vote yay or nay in our “Shadam” poll.

Don Diamont as $Bill Spencer

Bold & Beautiful spoilers for Friday, April 2:

Quinn urges Zoe to get revenge, Bill visits Brooke, and Liam kisses Hope.

Zoe finds an unexpected ally in Quinn — which makes sense, really. Heaven knows Eric’s wife shares the model’s tendency to connive and blame others when her plans blow up in her face. Could we be looking at a brand-new scheme team?

Liam makes a romantic gesture towards Hope. Which we can only presume will be bigger and more impressive than announcing, “Hey, guess what — I haven’t cheated on you in two whole months!” (Sorry, that was mean. But the guy does have a terrible habit of making boneheaded decisions, only some of which we’ve itemized here.)

Bold & Beautiful spoilers for week of April 5:
