Days of our Lives Black History Month Flashback: Meet Eli’s Trailblazing Parents

On Days of our Lives, Lani Price Grant just came face to face with her biological father. She’s going to need a lot of emotional support. And there is no one better to give it to her than her husband, Eli Grant, who only found out about his own biological dad a few years ago – not to mention his connection to the Hortons, the first family of Salem.

Days of our Lives History

But while Lani’s (Sal Stowers) paternity shocker came out of the blue, DAYS viewers had been there for the love story of Eli’s (Lamon Archey) parents from the beginning.

History Lesson

The United States had legalized interracial marriage in 1967 via Loving v. Virginia (though several states had accepted it earlier), but Black and white romantic pairings remained extremely rare in movies and on television, including on daytime.

Growing up, the angry young man David Banning found his mother, Julie Olson Williams (Susan Seaforth Hayes), overbearing and controlling (oh, how things haven’t changed!). To prove his maturity, David, more or less, ran away from home. He only came back in 1975 in order to collect an inheritance from his grandmother, Addie Horton (Hope’s biological mother). His relationship with Julie hadn’t improved much, and, one night, after a particularly nasty fight, David jumped into Doug Williams’ (Bill Hayes) car and drove off a bridge, to be presumed dead.

Finders, Keepers

David, of course, wasn’t dead. He was hiding out with the African-American Grant family, where he soon fell in love with their daughter, Valerie. As Valerie’s portrayer, Tina Andrews, recalled years later to January Magazine:

“There was such wonderful chemistry between Valerie and David Banning, played by actor Richard Guthrie, that the writers slowly developed an interracial relationship between the two”…(A)s the relationship between Valerie Grant and David Banning heated up, her fan mail bottomed out, going from “100 percent positive” to largely negative and hostile. Valerie Grant’s character was shipped off to Stockholm and Andrews was canned.

Plot Twist

Ironically enough, David and Valerie’s relationship ended the first time because David’s one-night stand, Trish, turned up pregnant with David’s baby. David and Trish got married, had a son, Scotty, and broke up again.

Valerie returned to Salem in the early 1980s and she and David tried to rekindle their romance, but, this time around, the chemistry just wasn’t there. (Possibly because both David and Valerie were now being played by different actors.) But something must have gone right because that would have been the period when Eli was conceived.

Y&R Star Eric Braeden Talks Victor Newman’s Inability To Let Work Go

Y&R star Eric Braeden recently appeared on CBS’s The Talk where he discussed his on-screen alter ego — The Great Victor Newman. Victor is supposedly retired, but The Mustache can’t keep his hands out of his business empire for long.

Eric Braeden on why Victor Can’t Let Go of Work

In the clip, which you can see below, The Talk co-host Sheryl Underwood asked, “Is Victor really letting the kids take over?”

After a dramatic pause, Braeden replied, “No, I mean a little bit, you know. But I’m watching like a hawk. One misstep…can’t let go,” which likely means that both Victoria Newman Locke (Amelia Heinle) and Adam Newman (Mark Grossman) should watch their backs at work.

Braeden continued, noting of how his experience with fatherhood does not follow that of his powerful on-screen alter-ego’s. “I think it’s difficult for some fathers, powerful fathers, to let go and let their children, their sons or their daughters take over, very hard. In real life, not so hard.”

He shared that his son, Christian Gudegast, “chose a totally different profession” than his, and instead of acting, Gudegast became a writer and director. Braeden shared, “my son asked me to play a little part” of his upcoming film, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera.

One Take

During his appearance on The Talk, Eric Braeden also shared that most of the time in daytime television, actors film every scene in one or two takes. That means he often runs dozens of pages of dialogue in one day.

“What people don’t realize about daytime, we do this stuff in one or two takes…The most I’ve ever done in one day was 62 pages of dialogue. So you just cram in between scenes, you just cram, but it keeps your mind sharp,” the soap vet said.

GH Alum Stuart Damon Remembered On The 85th Anniversary Of His Birth

It was a very sad day last June 29, when beloved General Hospital star Stuart Damon passed away. Now, on the day he would have turned 85 years old, we once again remember and honor the incredible body of work he left for us to enjoy.

Remembering Stuart Damon

He was born on February 5, 1937, in Brooklyn, New York. Damon began his career with roles in a number of Broadway shows, including First Impressions, From A to Z, and Irma La Douce.

In 1965, he was selected to star as Prince Charming in a made-for-television version of the popular Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Cinderella. Afterward, the handsome actor decamped to the United Kingdom and made his West End debut with Charlie Girl.

Having only appeared in one American TV program – a 1962 episode of the Naked City – Damon quickly made a name for himself as a television actor while in the UK. Among the many series he guest-starred on were The Bed-Sit Girl, The Saint, Department S, Steptoe and Son, A Touch of Class, and The New Avengers.

He also had recurring roles on Shirley’s World and The Main Chance and held leading roles in two projects: the espionage thriller The Champions and the sitcom Yanks Go Home.

Upon returning to the United States, Stuart Damon joined the cast of the ABC daytime drama General Hospital as Dr. Alan Quartermaine. He first appeared in the role on September 12, 1977, and he remained there until Alan succumbed to a stress-induced heart attack 31 years later.

A storyline that saw Alan become addicted to painkillers netted Damon the 1999 Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

Post GH, he recurred on As the World Turns as “Uncle” Ralph Manzo, a gangster, and as Governor Jim Ford on Days of our Lives. Between 2011 and 2013, Damon made a number of guest appearances on GH as either a comforting apparition or the manifestation of a character’s fantasy.

GH Spoilers Recap for Feb. 4: Peter Escapes With Weezy Faison

The GH spoilers recap for Friday, February 4, 2022, features an audacious escape, Sonny Corinthos getting the wrong end of the stick, and more.

GH Spoilers Recap Highlights

To probably no one’s surprise, Peter August (Wes Ramsey) had a man on the inside. No, literally; one of the guards in the van was on the take. Evil PC Copper KO’d Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna) and was most likely the one who shot and grievously injured poor Mac Scorpio (John J. York).

A concerned Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) and Felicia Scorpio (Kristina Wagner) arrived on the scene minutes too late to actually be of much help — as is Anna’s wont. Mac was rushed to GH with his wife by his side, and Agent Devane stayed behind to bark obvious orders and warn the audience how dangerous Peter is.

Exactly how dangerous is Peter? Well, he murdered Evil PC Copper, so we’re gonna say very. And now that lunatic has got his hands on precious Louise. Geeze, Brook Lynn Quartermaine (Amanda Setton) and Chase (Josh Swickard) are some pretty bad sitters, no?

General Hospital Recap: Second Choice

GH Spoilers Recap: All The Rest

* Sam McCall (Temporary Recast Lindsay Hartley) is in a bit of pickle. You see, she’s got feelings for Dante and Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison), and she doesn’t know what to do about it.

* Maxie Jones (Kirsten Storms) has got feelings for Austin Gatlin-Holt (Roger Howarth), but he’s not sure if she’s playing him or being genuine. So perhaps they should err on the side of caution and just call it quits.
