A Critic’s Review Of Days of our Lives: A High Note & Wasted Opportunity

The author’s opinions are his and his alone. They’re suitably scathing, fairly humorous, and normally bang on target.

Days of our Lives Critic's Review for October 24 – October 28, 2022

When it comes to Days of our Lives, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of the Days of our Lives week that was.

Days of our Lives: A Critic’s Week In Review

I’ve previously opinioned, on more than one occasion, that Days of our Lives is at its best when interpersonal interactions — especially between inter-generational characters — are front and center.

Take Maggie Horton Kiriakis’s (Suzanne Rogers) and Sonny Kiriakis’s (Zach Tinker) recent scenes for example. Sure, I didn’t necessarily agree with everything that was said — why should Will Horton (Chandler Massey) be the one to give up his career to placate Sonny? How about Sonny quit the job he was handed on a silver platter and support Will and the career he built on his talents as a writer? — but the moment was wholly relatable — who hasn’t groused about their romantic woes to a family member? — and Maggie’s reference to Mickey was sniffle-inducing and her good-natured ribbing of Victor Kiriakis (John Aniston) delightful.

So that begs the question: how could DAYS bypass giving Allie Horton (Lindsay Arnold) and Johnny DiMera (Carson Boatman) a blowout, all-frills birthday extravaganza? The Hortons, the DiMeras, the Blacks, and the youths’ friends all in a room together, forced to play nice? Um, yes, please! Talk about a wasted opportunity.

Further DAYS Musings

* Just when I thought Days of our Lives would surprise me and let Gabi Hernandez (Camila Banus) exit that basement laboratory secure in the knowledge that she was being played but how by her fiancé, they psyched me out and went the clichéd, obvious route.

* Jessica Serfaty and her effortless realized, mercenary Sloan Petersen are real keepers.

A Critic’s Review Of General Hospital: Head Scratching Moments & Beyond

The author’s opinions are his and his alone. They’re suitably scathing, fairly humorous, and normally bang on target.

General Hospital Critic's Review for October 24 – October 28, 2022

When it comes to General Hospital, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of the GH week that was.

General Hospital: A Critic’s Week In Review

Is it just me, or was this week’s General Hospital all about stretching incongruity? First up, there were those rocky Malibu – *cough, cough* Jacksonville beaches on which Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison) and Carly Then Corinthos Now Spencer (Laura Wright) recited dialogue so insipid that it couldn’t be peddled anywhere else but daytime.

Then there was: Michael “Family Is Everything To Me, I’ll Never Be Like Sonny” Corinthos (Chad Duell) totally forgetting that he had a pregnant wife to escort to the hospital, and later he and Drew get in Ned Quartermaine’s (Wally Kurth) face and making out like he was some big bad and they were merely aggrieved parties. [Thank the universe that Ned turned it right back on those hypocrites and pointed out that, should it please him, he could turn the lot of them (Carly included) in for insider trading.]

Josslyn Jacks (Eden McCoy) confides to her dead first love that she and Cameron Webber (William Lipton) were drifting apart and that she was (apparently) only staying with him because he wouldn’t be able to handle losing her the morning after the two recommitted themselves to one another and made love for the second time.

Alley “The Mother From The Wonder Years” Mills stepping into Heather Webber’s shoes, Georgie Jones taking to Cody Bell (Josh Kelly) after just one drive-by interaction, Terry Randolph (Cassandra James) and Elizabeth Webber (Rebecca Herbst) believing their non-plan wouldn’t backfire, Britt Westbourne (Kelly Thiebaud) trusting that Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco) will come through for her by actually solving a case, Victor Cassadine (Charles Shaughnessy) proclaiming he wants to unite his family and then in the same breath threaten to murder one of them…I could go on and on and on, much like a General Hospital storyline, but I’ll refrain. If only Chris and Dan/Dan and Chris would do likewise.

Further GH Musings

* I’m not going to say no to an undressed Josh Swickard, but I do wish that General Hospital wasn’t setting ‘ChaLynn’ up for an inevitable split once Brook Lynn Quartermaine’s (Amanda Setton) self-serving inaction is rumbled.

That said, the raucous ruckus caused by Olivia Falconeri Quartermaine (Lisa LoCicero) catching Harrison Chase in his birthday suit was a hoot. Also, the use of any variation on “Alan gave Monica the house” will never not be funny.

A Critic’s Review Of The Young and the Restless: What About Abby?

The author’s opinions are his and his alone. They’re suitably scathing, fairly humorous, and normally bang on target.

The Young and the Restless Critic's Review for October 24 – October 28, 2022

When it comes to The Young and the Restless, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of Y&R’s week that was.

The Young and the Restless: A Critic’s Week In Review

Could Abby Newman-Abbott-Chancellor (Melissa Ordway) be any more of an island unto herself on The Young and the Restless? Aside from Chance Chancellor (Conner Floyd) and occasionally Devon Hamilton (Bryton James), who does she interact with?

She’s spoken to Ashley Abbott (Eileen Davidson)…what…once since she’s been back? And that’s only because Ashley was on “Abby’s set” AKA Society. When’s the last time Abby set foot in the Abbott manse? The Newman Ranch? She didn’t attend Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor) and Summer Newman Abbott’s (Allison Lanier) vow-renewal ceremony despite being related to both parties. She didn’t even attend the opening of Noah Newman’s (Rory Gibson) nightclub.

I just do not understand how Y&R can justify so under-utilizing a character like Abby — what with blood ties to two of this soap’s prominent families and who’s on either familiar or antagonistic terms with nearly the rest of the canvas.

Further Y&R Musings

* Annnnnnnd Tucker McCall (Trevor St. John) is back in town to do exactly what we all suspected he would do: obtain Chancellor-Winters by any means necessary. Why am I not surprised that this storyline isn’t anything surprising?

* I had so hoped that The Young and the Restless was gearing up to unleash Chelsea Lawson’s (Melissa Claire Egan) inner Annie Lavery, but it suddenly swerved into a more than compelling look at one woman’s descent into suicidal depression. Brava to Egan for a fine performance.

* You don’t have to be an industry insider to know where Sally Spectra (Courtney Hope) is going to land next, not when Lily Winters (Christel Khalil) was seen complaining about her need for a competent COO at the exact same time that Red 2.0 was bemoaning her need for a job.

A Critic’s Review Of The Bold and the Beautiful: A Plethora Of Questions

The author’s opinions are his and his alone. They’re suitably scathing, fairly humorous, and normally bang on target.

The Bold and the Beautiful Critic's Review for October 24 – October 28, 2022

When it comes to The Bold and the Beautiful, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of B&B’s week that was.

The Bold and the Beautiful: A Critic’s Week In Review

Boy oh, boy did this week’s Bold and the Beautiful leave me with a plethora of questions. Now, I could just save myself the trouble of deep diving into each one and merely ask what the H-E-Double Hockey Sticks TPTB — and you all know exactly who I mean — are thinking, but I won’t do. No, I won’t.

Instead, I’ll start with an obvious one: How does Ridge Forrester (Thorsten Kaye) expect to obtain that annulment? There was no fraud or coercion, he and Brooke Logan Forrester (Katherine Kelly Lang) are not related by blood — that we know of, but given this soap’s preoccupation with skirting the act of incest, anything is truly possible — nor was there anything being concealed at the time of the vow swap, nor was either party legal wed to another, and they most certainly were not underage at the time of deeming.

I suppose that one could argue that neither one of them was of sound mind. According to Einstein, “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results,” and that wedding was…what? Number six — not counting invalid/interrupted attempts which I do believe brings the total to 11.

I’d also like to know:

* How can Taylor “World Renowned Psychiatrist” Hayes (Krista Allen) justify being with a man who admittedly chose her on a whim after he was struck on the head by a falling pine-cone? Surely if a patient disclosed a story like that, Taylor would advise them to do some soul searching…surely?!

* Where did get Deacon Sharpe (Sean Kanan) get that ring he used to propose to Brooke? His speech seemed to imply that he’d been in possession of it at least as long as he has been out of prison, but that doesn’t exactly track now does it?

* When did stuffing one’s hair down into the neck of a sweater becomes a fashion trend/statement? Oh, that’s right, it didn’t. Someone tell Jacqueline MacInnes Wood — Bold and Beautiful’s Steffy Forrester Finnegan — to cut. It. OUT!

* When exactly did Steffy’s parent-trapping obsession rub off on Hope Logan Spencer (Annika Noelle)?

* Where does anyone get off calling that blue gown Hope modeled, “breathtaking?”

* Why didn’t someone, anyone take that Hope mannequin and reduce it to ash? Or, did they, and we’re looking at daytime’s answer to Tiffany Valentine?

* Why is it that The Bold and the Beautiful’s Wyatt Spencer, and his portrayer, Darin Brooks, continue to get the short end of the stick?

Further B&B Musings

* Had it been anybody else who so readily shared a confidence, I’d be furious, but given that it was prim and proper, perfect and perky Paris Buckingham (Diamond White), I’m going to let it slide. And for all of you who can’t detect sarcasm: sarcasm!

* When I think of the beach house, and the time that Taylor and Ridge spent there, I remember less, “magic,” and more Taylor contracting tuberculosis from The Riddler and that time the two tried to marry and the officiant declared them, “Man and…horse?!”

Soap Hub Performer Of The Week For GH: William Lipton

William Lipton brings maturity and wisdom to his role as Cameron Webber.

Soap Hub Performer Of The Week For GH: William Lipton

William Lipton and his portrayal of Cameron Webber is a reminder that every soap needs a good guy, a standup dude who’ll do the right thing. General Hospital had that in original cast member John Beradino (Dr. Steve Hardy). That legacy is continuing with Lipton’s Cameron, who just happens to be Steve’s great-grandson. For his earnest portrayal of Cameron, Soap Hub bestows Performer of the Week for GH honors on Lipton.

William Lipton – Performer of the Week

We suspect that anyone who tries to win Josslyn Jacks’s (Eden McCoy) heart is going to find a formidable obstacle in Cameron Webber (William Lipton). He’s a rock in Joss’s life and, as we recently saw, he’s also a loyal pal to Spencer Cassadine (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) even when he doesn’t deserve it. But that’s what’s special about what Lipton brings to Cameron; he may be young but Lipton shows that Cameron knows it’s easy to stand by someone when everything’s going well — a true friend will stick by you when times are tough!

The only ‘problem’ with good guys is that they don’t have the best poker faces. Cameron couldn’t exactly hide the truth when Spencer pointedly asked if Trina Robinson (Tabyana Ali) knew about him believing in her innocence all along when it came to Joss and Cameron’s sex video.

Joss shared that Trina does know so she and Cam tap-danced as fast as they could to come up with viable reasons as to why Trina hadn’t come to see their incarcerated pal. In an effort to boost Spencer’s spirits and combat his self-hatred comments, Cameron recounted the time he started a fire at Spencer’s birthday party when they were kids, which left literal scars on the Cassadine heir. Cam noted that if Spencer can look past that and be his friend today then, perhaps other relationships can have staying power, too.

“Spencer, I choose you as my friend…” he told Spencer, “that’s what friendship is…loving someone with the inevitability that they’ll let you down.” Spencer tried to make light of his cousin’s heartfelt words by calling him a sap, but Cameron wouldn’t let up. He wished his friend well and told him that he wanted him to be okay and safe so that when Spencer gets out, he’ll know he has some friends waiting for him.

Later, Cameron and Joss re-affirmed their love for one another by spending the night together. As she was on her way out the door the next morning, Dr. Hamilton Finn (Michael Easton) showed up and there was no denying what had transpired the night before.

Finn isn’t quite Cam’s stepdad (yet?) but he couldn’t help but inquire as to what had likely transpired with Joss just hours ago. Finn playfully shot back to Cam, “You got any proof?” when Cameron asked if Elizabeth Webber (Rebecca Herbst) had asked the good doctor to check up on him and his brothers. Proving turnabout is fair play — and that Cameron can be respectful while keeping his personal life private — Cam, as in any great verbal tennis match, shot back to the kind doc, “You got any proof?” when Finn noted that Joss likely had spent the night.

When Cameron realized that he knew more about his mom’s out-of-town visit than Finn did, he gently broke the news to the doctor that Liz was in the same town as her parents. Finn was lost as to what Liz is going through but Cameron offered a theory — he believes he and his mom struggle with the same baggage and that folks may underestimate what they are capable of handling. Cam explained that Finn trying to help Liz has the potential to make her feel helpless — the last thing that Finn wants. “I know your heart is in the right place…she doesn’t need you to be her hero because she’s already her own hero,” noted Cameron, showing a maturity wise beyond his years.

Quite frankly, it’s the kind of insight and advice that Steve Hardy might have doled out to a loved one. Bravo to William Lipton for carrying on the great tradition of compassionate leading men in Port Charles.

Soap Hub Performer Of The Week For Y&R: Judah Mackey

His performance as Connor Newman, confused by his mother’s actions, was spot on this week!

Soap Hub Performer Of The Week For Y&R: Judah Mackey

The Young and the Restless viewers know that Connor Newman is a sensitive kid and his parents typically work hard to keep him happy and healthy, but lately, Connor’s mom, Chelsea Lawson, hasn’t been herself, and he’s noticed and spoken up. For his performance, Soap Hub Performer of the Week honors for Y&R is presented to Connor’s portrayer, Judah Mackey.

Judah Mackey — Y&R Performer of the Week

This week, Mackey showed off his acting chops as Connor let several people know about how his mom has been acting lately. The actor revealed Connor’s discomfort at Chelsea’s actions through his tone of voice as he delivered the emotionally charged dialogue to other adults like his dad, Adam Newman (Mark Grossman), and even when he spoke to Sally Spectra (Courtney Hope).

The scenes between Connor and Johnny Abbott (Paxton Mishkind) also gave Mackey the opportunity to express some similar concerns about Chelsea to a kid near his own age, which meant different delivery and a different type of body language and tone. He did an excellent job as a child speaking to grownups and then as a kid interacting with another kid. He skillfully shifted gears and helped us feel Connor’s excitement and making plans with Johnny through his facial expressions and happy body language, which was so markedly different from when Connor complained about his mom.

Then, there was Connor’s obvious excitement at his “sick” Halloween costume. It couldn’t have been easy to deliver such heavy dialogue while wearing something so different than usual, but Mackey looked like the professional he is dealing with extensive face and body makeup and interacting with the adults.

Judah Mackey really hit it out of the park with his portrayal of Connor. He does a great job with the character, and we love watching as he grows. He’s always a delight to see in the storylines, and we appreciate getting to see how he walks Connor through this difficult time as Chelsea’s depression and anxiety continue to spiral down. Congratulations on an excellent performance, and we look forward to seeing many more.

Soap Hub Performer Of The Week For DAYS: Greg Rikaart

The actor is rocking the verbal banter like a rock star!

Soap Hub Performer Of The Week For DAYS: Greg Rikaart

Greg Rikaart is a great asset to DAYS, if for no other reason because he doesn’t mind making an ass out of himself…both figuratively and literally. He most certainly deserves the honor that is Soap Hub’s Performer of the Week award.

Greg Rikaart — Performer of the Week

In Rikaart’s first scene, he was masked up — refer to the picture above for reference –swaying to a beat that only he could hear, and totally ignoring the job at hand, which, by the by, was handing out free cookies with a “Vote For Paulina” message pipped in frosting.

When his Leo Stark caught sight of Sloan Petersen (Jessica Serfaty), the lithe and lethal legal eagle that he’d stiffed, Leo tried to make a hasty exit, made all the more hilarious by the incongruous rubber disguise he was rocking.

Once Leo was called out and made to show himself — no, not in that way, you’re about as bad as Leo! — Sloan set about insulting his duds — “My P.I. told me you were hiding in plain sight dressed as a mule. I thought he was kidding, but sadly I was wrong.” — his present employment status — “Somebody in this town actually gave you a job? — and his less than savory past –“Leo, I have told you that a resume and rap sheet are two very different things.”

But Leo gave as good as he got. “First of all, it’s not a mule, it’s a donkey. And second, I’m not hiding, I’m working for Paulina Price’s campaign committee,” he explained before addressing her latter misalignments with a curt, if not slightly defeated, “And I have told you and told you that you…are very rude.”

There was further banter-cum-threats, and the two parted with Leo resigned to getting Sloan her cash and quick! Rikaart next shared the screen with comedy legend JackĂ©e Harry during which time their characters discovered they had a mutual foe in Sloan, and Leo leveled up in the job department when Paulina hired him as her Salem-based secretary — or, as Leo would so succinctly put it, “I’m the new Mary!” And yes, that was a double entendre, and yes Greg Rikaart delivered it with style and aplomb.

Soap Hub Performer Of The Week For B&B: Henry Joseph Samiri

Samiri plays Douglas as a young boy giving input into grown-up decisions.

Soap Hub Performer Of The Week For B&B: Henry Joseph Samiri

We’ve missed Henry Joseph Samiri and his adorable portrayal of Douglas Forrester on The Bold and the Beautiful. No matter how many grown-up situations the character finds himself in, Samiri never lets us forget that Douglas is still a kid. For his performance as the object in a custody tug of war, Soap Hub bestows Performer of the Week for B&B honors upon Samiri.

Henry Joseph Samiri – Performer of the Week

Like many children, Douglas Forrester is a sponge in that he picks up all sorts of things — like becoming an expert chess player thanks to great-grandfather Eric Forrester’s (John McCook) girlfriend Donna Logan (Jennifer Gareis), who is also Douglas’s great aunt.

Liam Spencer (Scott Clifton) tried to gently broach the subject of Douglas leaving the Forrester mansion and returning home to live with him and Hope Spencer Logan (Annika Noelle) and Beth. “I love it here. This is where I want to be,” Douglas informed Liam unsure if his words would carry any weight in the manner. “What I really want is to be with both of my parents — my mom and my real dad.” Douglas didn’t mean to hurt stepdad Liam with that remark but the simple words he spoke had to have had an impact on him.

Douglas patiently listened as Liam recounted many of the fun times they shared together involving making Halloween costumes and science projects, but ultimately, Douglas wasn’t going to be swayed by his words. In the capable hands of Henry Joseph Samiri, Douglas is perhaps soaps’ most polite young player. We see him absorbing what’s going on around him and waiting patiently to speak what’s on his mind. “You’re really cool, Uncle Liam, but so is my dad [Thomas Forrester, played by Matthew Atkinson],” Douglas gently told the man who’s married to his mother. “I like hanging out with him and my mom. They’re my family. My real family.”

Later, at Forrester Creations, Douglas was overjoyed when Hope didn’t object to his continuing to live with his father. Samiri never plays Douglas as manipulative (unlike his dad who used an app that alters voices to re-pair his parents) but rather as a young boy who simply states what he wants in a way that makes it difficult for anyone to say no. Soaps are filled with overly precocious children but Samiri brings a charming honesty to his role as Douglas Forrester.

Spooky Spoilers for the Week of October 31-November 4/November 7-11, 2022

The Young and the Restless

How Halloweenishly appropriate that Nate’s co-conspirator is unmasked, Billy is in a way haunted by an ex, and Diane is moved to tell what, since it’s about her, amounts to a ghost story. Read on to get all the treats, with no tricks, filling your goody bag with new teasers.

Friday, October 28:

Chelsea takes to the rooftop to end the pain, Lily delivers bad news, and Victoria and Adam call a truce.

It must be sweater weather in hell, because Adam and Victoria call a truce. Anyone wanna bet whether it lasts all the way till Monday or not?

Off his upset with Lily, Billy lends his support to Chelsea. Could she be getting the second chance with him that had been hoping for?

When Devon opens up about his relationship with Amanda, we could find out how Mishael Morgan’s recent decision is going to impact the couple’s future.

Week of October 31:

Y&R Restless Rant! Hot topics: Chelsea’s story is heartbreaking… and disappointing, Sally’s new gig, Victoria’s misstep, and trouble ahead for these couples.

Monday, October 31:

Nate ponders an enticing offer. Perhaps the one that will move him into the CEO position at Newman Media? (Smart money is on yes.)

Could this be the end of Adam’s detente with Victoria already? It might be if she turns out to be the person with whom he crosses the line. But perhaps he’s crossing a line on her behalf? Or maybe he just messes up with Sally again.

How much support does she need? Billy was propping up Chelsea on Friday, and he’s still at it today!

Tuesday, November 1:

Whelp, it wasn’t gonna remain a secret forever. Wonder how hard Devon is going to hit the roof when he discovers Nate and Victoria’s alliance.

Oh, Chance. Pants on fire is always a dead giveaway. No wonder Abby is able to catch her husband in a lie.

Leaving no room for confusion or misinterpretation, Lily sets the record straight. But for whom is she having to clarify things?

Wednesday, November 2:

File this under “Totally Predictable”: Victor questions Nick’s judgment about Sally.

Since Kyle learns disturbing news and Phyllis scores a win against Diane on the same day, we’re going to go ahead and climb out on a limb and say that the two teasers are related.

Thursday, November 3:

Lily and Billy share a difference of opinion. Perhaps about how much “support” he should be giving Chelsea?

Off her shocking discovery that straight-arrow Chance is capable of bending the truth until it snaps, Abby confides in Devon. Perhaps this is the beginning of Young & Restless’ next big love triangle as Melissa Ordway teased!

If Nate and Elena discuss their relationship, we’re going to have to predict that they are doing so in past tense, ’cause she’s made it pretty clear she’s just not that into him any longer. He’s certainly not the same fella she first got involved with!

Friday, November 4:

Jack and Phyllis have shared so many things over the years, a whole lot of them being differences of opinion. So what’s one more, right? Whether they like it or not, that’s what they’re having today.

We’ve heard this one before: Diane comes clean. But are we going to get the truth this time, the whole truth or nothing like the truth, hmm?

Can’t imagine what it might be when Ashley faces a tough decision about Tucker. He’s a two-timing rat bastard — her only choice there should be whether to walk away from him or run!

The Bold and the Beautiful

It’s the event we’ve all been waiting for. That’s right, the Forrester clan is putting on a fashion show! Of course, even as everyone’s watching models work the catwalk, Liam is watching his wife get ever closer to Thomas!

Friday, October 28:

Douglas campaigns for Hope and Thomas to get together, Katie teases a new man, and Liam panics to Brooke.

Sheila has been very much enjoying her time with Deacon, so it’s no surprise that she sees a free-and-single Brooke as a threat. But just how far might she go in order to eliminate the competition?

Does Liam have reason to be concerned about his wife? He certainly thinks so after listening to a conversation between Hope, Thomas and Douglas!

Week of October 31

Monday, October 31:

As Sheila dons a rather unforgettable Halloween costume sure to cause flashbacks among some viewers, Young & Restless‘ Lauren Fenmore gets caught up in memories she’d probably rather forget. Is the soap setting up the Lauren/Sheila reunion of our dreams… er, nightmares?

Tuesday, November 1:

It’s been a while since Forrester Creations took us for a stroll down the catwalk, so it’s not surprising that Thomas and Hope are so busy. But as they’re putting the finishing touches on the latest Hope for the Future designs, they’re also getting closer. Can Thomas keep his resurgent feelings under wraps? (Maybe he should step behind the dressing screen and confide in the mannequin… )

Wednesday, November 2:

Liam wants nothing more than to believe that Hope could never fall under Thomas’ influence again. When his inability to trust Thomas pushes Liam to make a big decision, is it one he’ll come to regret?

Thomas is there cheering from the sidelines as Hope makes a passionate speech to the most important people in the fashion business.

A real-life love triangle of sorts turns up on the CBS soap today.

Thursday, November 3:

The Hope for the Future preview turns out to be a huge success, and it’s capped off with the line’s namesake looking glam in a gown designed by — who else? — Thomas.

We’ve been missing Wyatt of late, but he finally shows up today… and the timing couldn’t be better. Why? Because he and dad Bill are tasked with trying to convince Liam to do the right thing.

All good things must come to an end, as Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke) says ciao… for now: “I miss you already…”

Friday, November 4:

It’s basically Liam’s worst nightmare come to life as Hope, Thomas and Douglas share an incredibly special moment. If the increasingly disturbed hubby can take solace in anything, it’s that Bill and Brooke see things the same way he does. But is there anything they can do to make Hope see the parent trap she’s walking into?

Things heat up for Eric and Nicole behind the camera, and Xander’s asked to kidnap Susan.

A Critic’s Review Of The Bold and the Beautiful: Faux Pas & Wasted Opportunity

The author’s opinions are his and his alone. They’re suitably scathing, fairly humorous, and normally bang on target.

The Bold and the Beautiful Critic's Review for October 17 – October 21, 2022

When it comes to The Bold and the Beautiful, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of B&B’s week that was.

The Bold and the Beautiful: A Critic’s Week In Review

Call me naive, call me ill-informed, but I think a headwriter doubling down on their mistakes, rather than making a sincere effort to course correct, is most unbecoming. I for one am still sore that Bradley Bell not only christened Steffy Forrester Finnegan’s (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) babe Hayes but after the fans pointed out the faux pas — Taylor’s (Krista Allen) maiden name is actually Hamilton whereas Hayes is the last name of her first husband/abuser — he scripted Taylor to effusively praise the moniker as if that would somehow absolve him. It did not.

Then, if Rena Sofer is to be believed — and I for one think that she is — The Powers That Be tells her that they’re unable to come up with any meaningful, worthwhile material that will keep her on the front burner, which results in the superstar, rightfully, jumping ship. Really? Sitting here I can come up with at least five juicy scenarios that would have kept Quinn Fuller Forrester in the fore for years to come. Heck, my colleague Amber Sinclair not only thought of them, but she also published them right here on Soap Hub.

Adding insult to injury, the show scripted an off-screen scarpering for the Queen of Scheme and had Carter Walton’s (Lawrence Saint-Victor) monologue to Katie Logan (Heather Tom) about how his and Quinn’s relationship fell apart because they both reached the conclusion that they wanted different things. Hell, there’s your story. Don’t tell us the problems that these two wrestled with, show them wrestling. That’s Soap Opera 101.

I’m also of the opinion that it would behoove Bell to stop treating his audience like it’s not watching the show every day. We do. We follow this skein day in and day out, meaning we do not require the constant recapitulation either through oft-quoted dialogue or oft-repeated flashbacks.

An episode of The Bold and the Beautiful runs only 19 minutes sans commercials but if you were to eliminate the gratuitous ingemination, you wouldn’t be left with much.

For years, I thrilled to and championed Bell’s often brilliant storymanship: Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) and Thorne?! (It somehow worked) Brooke and Deacon?! (It REALLY worked, and talk about HOT!) Taylor’s dead, then she’s alive, then dead, then alive. Attempted murder by a python! And who would have ever guessed that I’d actually root for Sheila Carter (Kimberlin Brown) to get one over on the Forresters and find her happily ever after? (But root for I did.)

But for some time now (okay, for a LONG time now), I’ve found myself watching a show that I no longer recognize — would it kill someone in that writer’s room to get something, anything right? — nor like.

And there are only so many times I can console myself with the memories of what once was. I know Bradley Bell can do better. He has done better. Much, much better.

Further B&B Musings

* Gosh, I forgot how enjoyable Hope Logan Spencer (Annika Noelle) can be. If only she’d find her backbone more often.

* Since when is Justin Barber (Aaron D. Spears) on the straight and narrow and working for Forrester Creations? Wasn’t he supposed to be Ridge Forrester’s (Thorsten Kaye) ace in the hole when came to taking down Big Bad Bill Spencer (Don Diamont)? Yet another teased and dropped plot-cum-wasted opportunity.

A Critic’s Review Of Days of our Lives: Blackmailing & Sleuthing Miss

The author’s opinions are his and his alone. They’re suitably scathing, fairly humorous, and normally bang on target.

Days of our Lives Critic's Review for October 17 – October 21, 2022

When it comes to Days of our Lives, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of the Days of our Lives week that was.

Days of our Lives: A Critic’s Week In Review

If there’s one upside to this whole, ridiculous ‘Kristen Blackmailing Brady Into A Relationship’ storyline — and believe me, I struggled to find even this one — it’s that the couple will be sharing very close quarters with John Black (Drake Hogestyn) and Marlena Evans Black (Deidre Hall).

I’ve always been a sucker for stories that find a bunch of people who love to hate — or just plain hate — one another forced into the same abode whether it’s the quarrelsome Quartermaine’s of General Hospital or, since we’re talking Days of our Lives, the likes of Tony DiMera (Thaao Penghlis), Anna Fredricks DiMera (Leann Hunley), David Banning (Gregg Marx), and RenĂ©e DuMonde Banning (Philece Sampler). Does anybody else remember that?

What would have actually made this whole exercise worthwhile, however, would be if Brady (Eric Martsolf) had actually clued Chloe (Nadia Bjorlin) in on Kristen’s (Stacy Haiduk) shenanigans and the pair had continued their loving on the sly while also sleuthing their way to that much-prized orchid that Kristen is holding over Brady’s head. Isn’t that the kind of plot that Days of our Lives used to excel at?

Further DAYS Musings

* File Rafe Hernandez (Galen Gering) and Nicole Walker Hernandez (Arianne Zucker) marital woes under ‘You Reap What You Sow’.

* I’m gratified to see that my fear that Days of our Lives would quietly consign Matthew Ashford to the backburner was unfounded…so far.

* Is it just me, or was the best scene of the whole week Tripp Johnson (Lucas Adams) attempting to rearrange EJ DiMera’s (Dan Feuerriegel) jaw with his fist? I generally abhor when confrontations between characters turn physical but darn it if that was satisfying.

I think a close second would be EJ speedily pronouncing that it was Sami Brady (Alison Sweeney) whom Johnny DiMera (Carson Boatman) inherited his temper.

In case you’re wondering, Gwen Rizczech (Emily O’Brien) getting intimate with her hospital pillow doesn’t even rank.

* There had better be more to the “Femme’s In Peril” arch than what’s transpired so far, because this has been nothing if not underwhelming.
