Soap Hub Performer of the Week for GH: Sofia Mattsson

Sofia Mattsson turned in a tour-de-force on General Hospital last year as her character, Sasha Gilmore Corbin, dealt with the death of her newborn son. As the fallout from that emotionally-packed storyline continues, Mattsson continues to deliver powerful performances and has once again earned Soap Hub’s Performer of the Week for GH honors.

Sofia Mattsson – Performer of the Week

As if Sasha didn’t have enough to deal with emotionally, she found herself the target of tabloid reporter Grant Smoltz (David Lautman), who gives journalists a bad name, and Sienna Colby (Cynthia Zitter), a drug peddler who gives women with blue hair a bad name.

Sienna tried to get Sasha to spill some tea on Harmony’s tragic death but Sasha wasn’t biting. She excused herself from their night out and wished Sienna well. Later, Sasha’s instincts in extricating herself from Sienna’s company turned out to be validated after she came upon Sienna and Smoltz together.

Sofia Mattsson played both Sasha’s fury and hurt over Sienna’s betrayal. Smoltz tried to bate Sasha by asking her if she fell off the wagon in terms of drug use after her son died. His method worked — but not the way he had in mind. In a rage, Sasha picked up a nearby metal sign and started to smash Smoltz’s windshield. Soon, Brando Corbin (Johnny Wactor) arrived and wrested the sign away from his wife. He tried his best to console her but Sasha couldn’t be consoled.

Emotionally and physically spent, Sasha remained silent as Brando continued to comfort her. Later, at the Port Charles police station, a near catatonic Sasha informed Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna) that she just couldn’t take it anymore. Despite Brando’s pleas to have his wife released, she was booked — however, Mattsson played her character as so broken and beaten down, we’re not quite sure Sasha will remember much of what happened once she was taken into custody.

The next day, Sasha changed her clothes thanks to her mother-in-law Gladys Corbin (Bonnie Burroughs) and began to open up a little bit. She simmered with anger over the way Sienna and Smoltz tried to use her. Ultimately, Sofia Mattsson brings inner strength to her character so while Sasha’s facing a setback we have no doubt that she’ll ultimately rise above and reclaim her life.
