An acting showcase has long been due DAYS powerhouse Lauren Koslow – and the soap has delivered but good. For her commanding work as a mother out to avenge the son she believes to be dead, Soap Hub bestows Koslow with Performer of the Week honors.
Lauren Koslow – Performer of the Week
Koslow’s Kate Roberts is usually all bluster and sheer bitchery; a mask designed to keep all those who cross her path on their toes. But Koslow let her alter ego wear her truest emotions on her sleeve during the scenes where Kate positively identified Philip Kiriakis’s (Jay Kenneth Johnson) prosthetic leg.
“I don’t want to be comforted…I don’t want to be consoled,” she screeched at Roman Brady (Josh Taylor) before rising to her feet and demanding the arrest of Brady Black (Eric Martsolf) – the prime suspect in her son’s disappearance. Seconds after that righteous outburst, Kate folded into Roman’s arms, her cheeks streaked with tears, proving, despite herself, that she really did want some of that consolation.
When Chloe Lane (Nadia Bjorlin) entered the picture soon after, Koslow patted away Kate’s tears and stiffened her entire body – subtle preparation for the assault, both physical and verbal, that she was about to launch.
Kate began by slapping Chloe’s face. Then she let the younger woman know exactly what she thought of her – and in no uncertain terms. “You love men’s attention…I just can’t understand why they don’t see you for what you actually are. A shallow, dim-witted twit…You are nothing but a cheat…You are pathetic!” Whether it was the strike, or the condemnation that stung Chloe worst, we can not say.
But even that wasn’t the pièce de résistance of Koslow’s performance. No, that came courtesy of a far less showy scene, one where Kate darkened Brady’s hospital room doorway, and threatened, nay promised, that, “If my son is a dead man, you’re a dead man too!” Brady believed Kate, and no doubt so did DAYS fans everywhere.
