Soap Hub Performer of the Week for GH: Rebecca Herbst

While Rebecca Herbst (Elizabeth) has overall been woefully underused on General Hospital in recent months, we’d be remiss not to acknowledge that the show gave her some powerful material recently. For her performance as a widow faced with offing her husband’s killer and opening her heart to a new love, Soap Hub bestows Performer of the Week for GH honors on Herbst.

Rebecca Herbst – Performer of the Week

We can’t figure out why GH didn’t have Elizabeth find out on-camera that her true love Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) had died while trying to save Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison) however, Rebecca Herbst played the poignant fallout with Hamilton Finn (Michael Easton) beautifully at the hospital. As fate would have it, the man responsible for both Franco Baldwin (Roger Howarth), Liz’s husband, and Jason’s death, Peter August (Wes Ramsey) was poisoned and found himself being treated at GH.

Herbst brought a grim stoicism to her part when Liz realized she had an opportunity to be alone in a cubicle with an unconscious Peter. She brought a scalpel with her and had on her mind the possibility of ridding the world of the unlawful sociopath. Serendipitously, Finn walked in and urged Liz not to go ahead with what she was thinking of doing.

Rather than thank Finn for keeping her from killing Peter, Elizabeth said that he stopped her from getting rid of the man who has caused her sons so much grief by killing either their father or stepfather. Finn allowed Liz her feelings but pointed out that had she killed Peter then he’d have succeeded in robbing Liz’s boys of their mother and not just their fathers.

Finn offered Liz (Rebecca Herbst) his shoulder to lean on or if she just wanted to hit him that would be okay too. Next, Liz did something Finn wasn’t expecting – she leaned in and kissed him, beating a hasty retreat out of the room.

Next, Elizabeth got to share her feelings as to what happened with Finn with pals Terry Randolph (Cassandra James) and Portia Robinson (Brook Kerr) in a yoga class. Liz not only shared with her friends that Finn was there to support her after Peter was brought to GH but also, that she kissed him! Portia and Terry took slightly different views on how Elizabeth should proceed – which was actually a good thing as it allowed her to look at both sides of her situation.

In true rom-com style, Liz and Finn ran into each other at the hospital. (He made a special trip there to see her — that is when you know a guy is interested!) They decided to talk about what the other wanted. It’s great to see Liz have some joy in her life once again. Rebecca Herbst’s Liz has lost two of the most important men in her life in a short amount of time. Finn’s seen his share of heartbreak, too.

Liz confessed to Finn that she’s scared by what she feels for him. “What if things don’t work out? I’m terrified of losing you,” she said. Finn assured Liz that he wasn’t going anywhere and he feels the same way – he really cares about her. The future is bright for these two. We’d love to see more of Elizabeth being happy. Let’s hope that 2022 brings more airtime for the talented Rebecca Herbst as Liz finds happiness with Finn.

Honorable mention: Numerous GH actors delivered in this especially poignant week. Sonya Eddy’s Epiphany spoke the truth when she gently told Britt Westbourne (Kelly Thiebaud) that nobody calls her “the Britch” anymore. Thiebaud’s Britt brought compassion and humanity to baby Liam’s parents, Brando Corbin and Sasha Gilmore, played by previous Performers of the Week for GH actors Johnny Wactor and Sofia Mattsson. All these actors, along with Rebecca Herbst, have much to be proud of for their work in these episodes.
