General Hospital is firing on all cylinders these days but one set of scenes that particularly stood out for us this week were the ones involving Carly Corinthos and Nina Reeves at the Crimson offices where Nina works. The two women had another showdown scene over Sonny and the drama was in a word – riveting!
General Hospital Nina V Carly
The tension began in the General Hospital prologue when Nina (Cynthia Watros) was about to head to a meeting only to be told by Carly (Laura Wright), who showed up to her office uninvited, that she wasn’t going to make that confab. Carly was coming from a vulnerable place – Nina had information that Carly wanted but that didn’t stop Carly from barreling ahead as she demanded to know what transpired between Nina and Sonny (Maurice Benard) when he believed he was Mike and living in Nixon Falls.
The scenes continued as two strong-willed actresses, devoted to their characters and motivations, held their ground. Carly wouldn’t let go of her belief that Nina was determined to hurt her family. Nina shot back that if Carly didn’t want to lay eyes on her ever again, as Carly claimed, then she should leave her office.
And In This Corner
On one hand, Carly is still Mrs. Sonny Corinthos and she shares a family with him. But it was clear that Sonny wasn’t keeping his wife in the loop as he didn’t tell her he got drunk on New Year’s Eve and spent the evening with Nina. Wright kept persisting as Carly but, as we’ve written, Watros’s Nina is nobody’s pushover.
She drew the line after it became clear she can do no right in Carly’s eyes. “I’ve had it with you,” Nina shot back at Sonny’s wife. “I can’t win. If I don’t talk about Sonny I’m hiding something — if I talk about Sonny…” Before she could finish that thought, Carly interjected that Nina was a conniving bitch and always will be.
Carly kept talking as if she was in the power position but she also can’t rest until she finds out what exactly went down between her husband and Nina. At this point, the Crimson editor decided it was time for Carly to hear the truth – no, she and Sonny/Mike didn’t sleep together but only because she (Nina) stopped it. The look on Carly’s face read that she was starting to regret her decision to confront Nina.
This General Hospital Battle Has Just Begun
Nina didn’t come looking for this fight but she didn’t back down from it either. She informed Carly that what happened between her and Mike could happen again. This prompted Carly to slap Nina. While the magazine editor’s cheek smarted from the slap, the person who was truly hurting inside was Carly. She can’t deny any longer that the man she loves has actual feelings for Nina. Carly can say it was “Mike” and not Sonny but it’s quite possible that deep down she knows better.
“The truth hurts — doesn’t it, Carly,” Nina informed her rival. Ordering Nina to stay away from her husband, Carly made her exit. Once alone, Carly brought her hand to her mouth as the realization that the truth indeed does hurt washed over her.
Nina and Carly’s rivalry on General Hospital won Best Feud at the 2nd Annual Soap Hub Awards last year. And scenes like the ones they had this week are a reminder of why fans love their dynamic. Laura Wright and Cynthia Watros are two powerhouse actresses. The writers have loaded their characters with conflict and backstory to get this feud burning bright indefinitely and we couldn’t be happier. This is what soaps are supposed to be!
