The Young and the Restless fans are still in shock over the Ashland Locke switch but are thrilled to be seeing Robert Newman, known for decades as Josh Lewis on Guiding Light, back on their TV screens. Now the beloved star has opened up about the new opportunity that brings him back to CBS daytime.
Y&R Star Robert Newman Opens up About Joining the Soap
Newman shared an article announcing he’d been recast as Ashland on his Facebook page. Along with the news, he added a statement about his new role. “Thanks to everyone for the sweet posts and messages about my joining the cast of Y&R,” the actor started.
“I couldn’t be more pleased. I’ve had great respect for the show and it’s [sic] wonderful cast for many, many years. I’m happy to be a part of it.”

The actor also explained a bit about the casting process, and how he’s preparing himself to become the “Locke-Ness Monster.”
“I had a lovely zoom meeting with [Y&R head writer] Josh Griffith and [Y&R executive producer] Anthony Morina last night. We talked quite a bit about the character, and I’m very excited by the scripts I’m getting so far.”
Of course, the role isn’t an easy one, and actor Richard Burgi left some big shoes to fill. “I’m scared to death, of course, but I think that’s healthy,” Robert Newman admitted. “It’ll be a new adventure and I’m feeling pretty blessed to have the opportunity. Cheers!”
Newman has plenty of daytime experience, though. During his 28-year run as GL’s Josh, the actor racked up some impressive performances and accomplishments, including two Daytime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
