On General Hospital, when a bartender at Nina Reeves’s new hotel was lippy to her, Sonny Corinthos had to swoop in and save the day. Nina didn’t appreciate his input. And told him so. Sonny was winding himself for a nice, silverware throwing, scenery chewing, soul-crushing fight, when Nina told him she didn’t appreciate one of those either.
New General Hospital Dynamic
Maybe this is how he and Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright) handled their relationship, but Nina (Cynthia Watros) wasn’t playing. Sonny (Maurice Benard) looked confused. This isn’t how it’s supposed to go with the latest woman in his life. Is Sonny trying to turn Nina into Carly?
GH: Change of Pace
One of Sonny’s main reasons for being with Nina was that she wasn’t Carly. She didn’t make demands of him like Carly did. She didn’t tell him what to do like Carly did. And she didn’t screetch at him the way Carly did. Nina was a refreshing change from the past 20 years.
Old General Hospital Habits Die Hard
But it’s obviously Sonny misses what he had. It’s why he’s trying to bait Nina into his and Carly’s old patterns. He may think he wants one thing, when, in reality, he wants another. No matter how many times he tells Nina he’s with her now, Carly keeps rearing her head – even when she’s not around.
GH: Psycho Babble
It’s not just habit. Science has shown that the human brain literally gets programmed when in a violent, abusive relationship – which Sonny and Carly’s clearly was; they’re both ready to admit it now – to the point where it can no longer recognize what a healthy relationship looks like.
Sonny only believes he’s loved when the woman is telling him everything that’s wrong with him. At a very high volume. Nina has a choice. She can slowly try to wean him off his obsessions and show him an alternative way to go, she can let him go, or…she can let him turn her into Carly.
