Soap Hub Performer of the Week for B&B: Kimberlin Brown

Sheila Carter, the biological mother of Dr. John ‘Finn’ Finnegan, is making up lost time for not being around for her son’s ‘terrible two’s’ or rebellious teen years. Dr. John ‘Finn’ Finnegan is fighting tooth and nail to get back to his family only Sheila isn’t having it. For her strong performance as Finn’s loving and unbalanced captor, Soap Hub bestows Performer of the Week Honors upon Kimberlin Brown, Sheila’s portrayer.

Kimberlin Brown – Performer of the Week

Since Sheila’s early days on sister soap, The Young and the Restless, Brown infused her character with an unnerving sociopathic willfulness. Nothing is ever Sheila’s fault. Poor Finn (Tanner Novlan) has been extracting dribs and drabs of information from his mother and, despite his ordeal, he’s come to the clear conclusion that Sheila’s unbalanced and he needs to get out from under her control.

We see Brown choosing carefully the inflections and tone of voice she uses when trying to keep Finn calm. She knows she can’t fully lie to him but her words often have a double meaning like when she said she that she’s the reason he is where he is. Well, yes, Sheila is monitoring his recovery in Li Finnegan’s (Naomi Matsuda) room but Sheila’s also the reason Finn’s where he is because she shot him!

Kimberlin Brown knows how to turn Sheila’s emotions on a dime. She’d still be locked up if she hadn’t stumbled upon old pal Mike Guthrie (welcome back, Ken Hanes!) and he hadn’t facilitated her ‘early release.’ Sheila’s voice will soften and she’ll charm Mike into doing her bidding.

As for Finn, we don’t believe that Sheila will ever hurt him. (Well, not intentionally!) In fact, Sheila keeps calling what she did ‘an accident.’ ‘Mama loves you more than anything in the world,’ Sheila told Finn. The scary part is that Sheila really believes this but, clearly, she’s blind to the fact that she causes life-threatening havoc wherever she goes!

Kimberlin Brown’s Sheila remained calm for as long as possible but after Finn tried to get himself out of bed so he could escape the naughty nurse’s clutches, she changed the game by getting out a sedative and injected her captive patient so he’d go out like a light. Talk about giving your child a time out! Sheila’s had many hostages over the year including Lauren Fenmore, her mother Molly Brown (Marilyn Alex), and James Warwick (Ian Buchanan), to name three, and now, Sheila is keeping Finn a prisoner. Conversely, Kimberlin Brown is keeping us captive with her powerful performances. Brava!

Honorable Mentions: Kimberlin Brown wasn’t the only B&B performer who stood out last week. We’d be remiss to not acknowledge that Tanner Novlan has been continuing to deliver as his character Finn fights in order to reunite with his family. We feel this guy’s pain! Also, kudos to Rena Sofer for Quinn Fuller Forrester’s comical and spot-on imitation of Donna Logan. Sure, Quinn got what she wanted by reuniting with Carter Walton (Lawrence Saint-Victor) but that doesn’t mean she’s ever going to be happy that Donna and her jars of honey hopped into bed with her husband Eric Forrester (John McCook).
